This Month in K5

August and September

In Bible we will be studying creation and Adam and Eve. We will also learn more about Noah and the ark and have an introduction to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We will begin learning Bible memory verses for the letters of the alphabet.

Language arts study will include an introduction to the alphabet, letters A and B, and a unit that will tie in with social Studies. We will continue with the letters C, D, E, and F and will also practice writing our letters.

math will include the introduction of graphing, positional words, sorting, and patterns. We will also learn the numbers 0 – 5.

In science and social studies we will study apples, Johnny Appleseed, community, school and we will review the colors. We will continue to learn about leaves and our five senses.

October

 

In October we enjoy a very nice day with our grandparents!  We do an activity with them, show them our routine and share a snack.  We also go to the fire station for a field trip to learn about fire safety and see the fire trucks.  We study the seasons, focusing on fall.  We talk about how things change in the fall.  We look at pumpkins and talk about how they grow…their life cycle.  We paint using fall colors.

November

 

This month we are learning about the First Thanksgiving.  We talk about the Pilgrims and their long journey and how they wanted the freedom to worship God the way they wanted to worship Him.  We talk about their friends the Indians.  The children will share what they are thankful for.

 

Our big service project takes place in November.  We make turkey boxes for the WNC Rescue Ministries.  We fill them with lots of fresh fruit and snack items.  The Rescue Ministries uses them to decorate their tables on Thanksgiving Day and the people who come get to take them with them after the meal. 

 

We are continuing through the alphabet working on letter sounds and how we blend those sounds together.  It is a very busy month!

December
 

This month we focus on the birth of Christ and tie it together with history.  We discuss the entire story of the birth of Jesus.

 

The children make Christmas sweatshirts to wear!  We do a unit on comparing the different versions of the story of The Gingerbread Man and conclude our unit by decorating gingerbread houses to display.

 

We make Christmas ornaments as gifts for our parents and discuss the different traditions that people celebrate at Christmas.

 

We enjoy graphing Christmas items.  Lots and lots of Christmas fun!

January

This month we will focus on the change in the weather, bringing a new season, snow, and snowflakes.  Science will follow that same theme as the children learn more about penguins, polar bears, and how penguins live only at Antarctica and polar bears live only in the Arctic.

In language arts we will introduce the letters N – P.  We will begin our sight word readers and the children will practice their flash cards with sight words at home.  The focus will be on long and short vowels and blending letter sounds.

In history we will be learning more about Martin Luther King, Jr. and will introduce American symbols for the next language arts unit.

Math will have a focus on number patterns, ordinal numbers, and odd and even numbers.

February

This month our Bible studies will continue to focus on Moses, including the Red Sea, the Ten Commandments, traveling in the wilderness, Moses’ death, the change of leadership to Joshua, and spies in the land of Canaan.  We will memorize Psalm 23.

In language arts we will study the letters P – S.  We will talk about hard work and never giving up!  We will begin working in decodable books and baggie books while continuing to learn our sight words.

Our focus in math will be on money (penny, nickel, dime), time (clock, time of day), and measurements (lengths, indirect comparisons, and measure lengths with nonstandard units).

In geography we will continue the study of the seven continents.
 
February is Black History Month, and we will study about famous Black Americans, including Harriet Tubman and George Washington Carver.  We will also study Lincoln, Washington, and American symbols.

February is a very busy month as we also talk about dental health, Groundhog Day, and the history of Valentine’s Day.  We also will celebrate the 100th day of school!  

March

In Kindergarten we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday with our 3rd grade buddies by reading stories written by Dr. Seuss and making a hat that we can eat!

We are continuing through the Old Testament in Bible.  We will be talking about the Kings and Prophets of Israel.

In language arts we will continue to move through the alphabet, practicing letter sounds and blending the sounds together.  We are working very hard on our sight words and practicing them by reading our sight word readers together.

As spring approaches we will be watching the changes in the weather and in God’s creation.  We will be talking about spring and how things grow.  We will talk about whether March comes in like a lamb or a lion.

Math will have a focus on number patterns, practicing with money, and time.

April

In Bible this month, we will be focusing on Jesus.  We will be talking about His time here on earth, His miracles, and the parables.  We will be talking about Easter.  We will focus on Christ’s death and resurrection.  We will have a Resurrection Breakfast on Good Friday.

In language arts, we will be finishing up the alphabet.  We are working on blending sounds when we are reading.  We are continuing to work on our 50 sight words.  Our unit in Open Court is Teamwork.  We will be talking about working together.  

In math, we are beginning  to work on addition.  We will be using manipulatives to do addition problems, working with story problems, and seeing different patterns in addition.

In science, we will be focusing on Spring.  We will talk about different baby animals, insects, birds, and other creatures.  We will be talking about living and non-living things.

May

In Bible we will be learning more about the ascension of Jesus and Pentecost, the history of the early church and Psalm 23.

Language arts study will include a unit on the ocean and ocean animals, blending words in context, writing and spelling, building confidence in reading, completion of sight words, and writing journals.

Math will include the introduction of subtraction and a complete review of addition.

In science we will study planting, living and nonliving things, recycling, and spring.

History/Geography units will include Mother’s Day, continents, and a study of wildlife.

Field Day and Kindergarten Graduation will be fun events to finish our year!
