Theatre

Middle School

Drama class is one of the most anticipated programs for students coming into Middle School. All sixth grade students participate in this class for one semester studying the important elements of a story and effective story-telling. Students form small groups that write and perform their own work using a box of puppets. These are performed for the Lower School students and are a wonderful example of the creativity that is fostered in this class.

In the seventh and eighth grades drama becomes an elective and moves from creative story-telling to the study of dramatic works from the past and elements that made them so enduring. Students work on performance in a casual, comfortable setting and develop a love for the art that bridges them to Upper School Theatre.

Upper School

The Upper School performs two major productions each year. Each of these productions takes place entirely outside of school time and is available to all students who wish to participate. Students involved in a production tend to come back again and again. The spirit of camaraderie and the focus on enjoying the process of bringing a production to stage can be addictive.

One of these productions is a traditional play and in the past has been a Shakespearean play like “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” or a work such as “Our Town” or “Little Women.”

The second production is a musical which provides a wonderful outlet for the entire Fine Arts department. When choosing productions, we strive to strike a balance for our students between time-honored pieces like “Fiddler on the Roof” and newer, lesser-known works like “The Spitfire Grill.”

The most important component to our selection of productions is that they be redeemable works through which students can express the glory of God.
