    Posted February 7, 2012

Asheville Christian Academy will hand each of its high school students an iPad in August at the opening of the fall term, school officials announced this week. All 185 upper school students will have one for the entire year. Teachers already have iPads in hand and are finding new ways to integrate the devices into their lesson plans and instruction. Several classes will use digital texts next year, but most will use the iPads as a tool to dig deeper into the current curriculum.

  • The ACA Family has given or pledged nearly $300,000 since last July

    Posted January 14, 2012

This includes all giving to ACA. What a signal of commitment, what a signal of generosity the ACA family has sent to the community: we WILL look after our affairs. We WILL look after our fine arts, our athletic facilities, our scholarship needs, our new land, our library, and our refurbished auditorium. We will see to it that our parents are offered parenting encouragement, that technology is regularly upgraded. We will see to it that the faculty gets an appreciation Christmas gift again this year.

Recently, our sixth grade conducted a Skype interview with ACA alum, and current University of Florida Chairman of the Department of Physiology and Kinesiology, Dr. Michael Delp. Dr. Delp has been conducting research involving the effect of lack of gravity on mice for NASA since 1989 and is currently working to have his next group of mice blast off in a Russian space craft. The class was anxious to hear about his research and about what life in space would be like. They had recently worked in groups to develop ideas for a contest called Kids Science Challenge, specifically the category of Meals on Mars.

The art faucet is on, blessing many

    Posted December 8, 2011

Something real good’s going on in the visual fine arts. The art, the color and the design just flow from the hallways. Something’s being expressed, and it makes the casual observer’s heart sing. The expressions don’t have a pinched “I had to” look to them. The lines and the color seem to say “I’m glad to.”

When drama teacher Becky Morgan chose "The Miracle Worker" for this fall’s Upper School production at Asheville Christian Academy, she wanted her students to do more than just memorize lines, blocking, and choreography. She wanted them to have a true sense of what Helen Keller experienced as a deaf and blind child learning to reach out and communicate with the world.

    Parent Strengthening Events at ACA

    Posted September 14, 2011

"Parenting is the most important work you will accomplish in this life," says Bill George, ACA's Head of School. "In a world of credentialing, certification, and licensure for our professional occupations, we do little or nothing to grow as parents – remembering that parenting is the most important thing we will ever do." To help us grow in our parenting skills, ACA has scheduled two opportunities this fall for parents to be challenged and encouraged.

Students Commemorate 10th Anniversary of 9/11

    Posted September 9, 2011

Upper school students at Asheville Christian Academy honored September 11 fallen heroes by writing their names on small flags and placing them in the school yard Friday morning. Principal Ray Kochis conceived the idea of individual flags because he didn't want the number 3000 dead to roll in and out of young people's consciousness. "It's easy to say the words 3021 dead, but I want our students to feel the scope of that number," Kochis says.
